Sample Collection and Processing Subcommittee

The Sample Collection and Processing Subcommittee’s primary responsibility is to support sample custodians, sample ambassadors, national nodes, regional nodes, across the African continent to safely and securely source their biological specimens for transmission to the relevant curation facilities and sequencing centres.

This subcommittee works closely with all other committees and subcommittees to ensure the relevant legal and ethical frameworks as well sample processing standards are adhered to and, ensures the implementation of and adherence to the Nagoya protocol. This subcommittee manages a range of sub-teams which includes taxonomic working groups – to assist in identifying priority species and; a team of national representatives – who are national Access and Benefit Sharing focal persons within their respective countries and who work closely with sample ambassadors to securely and ethically source species from their respective countries.

A major responsibility of this subcommittee is also to ensure all specimen data are curated and managed appropriately and to ensure IP and data ownership are always mutually beneficial between sample ambassadors and AfricaBP.
